Punakaiki Rocks, Seaweed and Wekas

493b (1024x683) Still pressing southwards from Westport we arrived at the famous Punakaiki (Pancake) Rocks.  We were extremely impressed with the vast network of well constructed paths, stairways and viewing platforms providing excellent viewing of all the different features.  Even though we are almost at the end of the summer tourist season, it was definitely foreign-tourist city here.  We haven’t encountered any Kiwi tourists yet!

The classic postcard view of Punakaiki Rocks. (Gosh, I get to shoot a  lot of rocks, don’t you think?)

The massive blowhole wasn’t blowing today, but the Surge Pool was in violent performance mode

Fascinating thick and lengthy seaweed is attached to all lower rocks

It really must be dyna-bolted on to survive the current created by the tremendous tidal surges
