Also along the Karamea Bight is a place called Seddonville, named after King Dick Seddon, longest serving NZ Prime Minister. Hicksville would have been a more appropriate name.
Although we opted not to do the 2 hour tour of the old Denniston Coal Mine, we did visit the site and found more than enough of interest. This mine is very high up the mountain and was an important site of coal production from 1880’s to 1970’s. It was famous for the engineering feat known as the Denniston Incline, an enormously steep railway track which allowed coal to be transported down to Westport. It’s difficult to show the perspective of the incline in photos but it is mind-boggling to stand at the top and look down.
and a couple of other treats
there’s a theme goin’ on here | one of us always has a soft spot for a good looking chook |
